Fox Lake stare down the barrel with their latest banger "Dog Eat Dog"

- By Ramon Gonzales

The potent meld of hip hop bounce and hardcore beatdown hit hard on the Colorado crew's standalone single.

Tear it all down to the skin and bones // You talk, they talk, who walks // Let me up when the bodies drop

Embracing the kind of bravado that can only come from that 90's golden era of heavy hip hop, delivered with the kind of violence and volatility of that beatdown brand of hardcore, Denver-based outfit Fox Lake swing with devastating intentions on their latest single, "Dog Eat Dog".

A steady, albeit slamming three minute assault, the track is a pummeling example of the band's stylistic meld fueled by the kind of confrontational stance that makes the cut wholly convincing. On "Dog Eat Dog", the band wears their creative influences on their sleeve, flexing a competent weave of visual swagger with heavy catharsis in a stylized show of aggression.

The band detail the structure of the track and it is indicative of the forecast for Fox Lake, “Dog Eat Dog is the combination of everything we want this band to be known for. It’s energetic, catchy, aggressive, thick, accessible, and incomparable. We wrote the bones of this song years ago, and it was one of the first songs that stuck out when we came back to the studio to start work on the music we’d be releasing this year. We pushed ourselves a lot on the instrumentation and even more so on the composition, and the finished product reflects so much of what this band is and so many of the tenets we want to build our future on."

The band also went on to explain the source material for the track, sharing what sparks the single's eventual inferno, "Lyrically it deals with owning the fear that controls so many people, stepping up and over it and moving past something that would stop other people in their tracks. It also touches on people’s inability to engage in any meaningful discourse and the “dog eat dog” mentality that permeates today’s political and social landscape. While the chest-beating and bravado is there, the core of the song is something very real and very critical of the fear that so many people will succumb to.”

The single in "Dog Eat Dog" offers an auspicious follow-up to the band's 2020 debut in Silence & Violence. Cultivating a powerful presence online, Fox Lake, despite the stall of the pandemic era, has continued their upward trajectory since, amassing more than a million plays tallying more than 25,000 monthly listeners on popular DSPs. Earning the cosign in the form of collaborative projects with the likes of Gideon and Cane Hill, Fox Lake keep good company while continuing to refine their craft.
