Return to The Further Next Year With 'Insidious 5'
After years of diminishing returns when it came to horror movies in the 2000s, James Wan pushed the genre into a refreshingly classic direction in the 2010s with the double whammy of Insidious and The Conjuring.
The two are similar in the way they utilize old school supernatural hauntings, launched their own adjacent franchises, and unleashed modern horror icons - both heroes and villains. Now, after years of laying dormant, Insidious is finally returning next summer with a fifth chapter.
Sony Pictures have officially announced that Insidious 5 will be coming to theaters on July 7th, 2023. Patrick Wilson, who starred in the first two films of the franchise as Josh Lambert, will be returning not only to reprise his role but will also be directing the film. It marks the directorial debut for the longtime actor. Ty Simpkins, who played Lambert's troubled son Dalton, will also be returning as the film will pick up a decade after the last movie as Dalton begins college.
“I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices,” Wilson said in a statement back in 2020. “Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go…”
In addition to Wilson in the director's chair, the script will be written by Halloween Kills scribe Scott Teems based on a story by Insidious co-creator (and a horror icon in their own right) Leigh Whannell, who wrote the first two films in the series (and directed the music video for "Ceremony" from Deftones last year).
With a brand new creative at the helm, one that knows the world and story franchise well already, the fifth chapter of this beloved horror franchise may just bring it back to life.
'Insidious 5' will be out in theaters July 7th, 2023.
