The recent restructuring of Lucasfilm Games has ushered in a new era that will include joint projects with multiple gaming developers.

Earlier this week, the Star Wars universe made a big revelation with the announcement of a clearly defined gaming arm of the brand with Lucasfilm Games.

Moving forward, Lucasfilm Games "is now the official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm" according to an official release from StarWars.com. Coupled with the news of the official gaming banner comes the announcement of a joint venture with gaming giant Ubisoft on an story-driven, open world Star Wars game.

Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly explained the progression of the project, the evolution of the gaming arm, and the promise of the partnership with Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment.

“We’re really excited about an opportunity to work with the team at Massive, led by David Polfeldt and the creative director, Julian Gerighty. We’ve spent almost a year now, working to get to know them and what they want to bring to the table,” Reilly says. “I’m a huge fan of them, personally. I think we’re really excited about where that project is going, because they have a unique vision for the story and the game they want to deliver.”

Utilizing the developers propriety engine, Snowdrop, the immersive quality of the entry will be second-to-none given the reputation established by existing titles like Tom Clancy's The Division 2. Creative director Julian Gerighty will head the project for Massive and look to forge a new era of the Lucasfilm gaming legacy. The project further cements the partnership with Disney, Ubisoft and Massive as the developers have been working on an untitled Avatar game, presumably lining up with the 2022 release of the next James Cameron epic.

The announcement convolutes the existing agreement with Electronic Arts, given the developer signed a deal to exclusively develop titles for George Lucas properties for a pans of ten years beginning in 2013. However, there seems to be no hiccup in adding more developers to this Star Wars party. Reilly detailed the concurrent projects again with StarsWars.com.

“We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA,” Reilly added. “We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA.”
